Stanford Basketball: 2019-20 season preview for the Cardinal
By Connor Hope
Season Outlook
Overall, this season will be somewhat of a rebuilding year for Stanford, which is unfortunate after their losing season last year. However, their relatively favorable non-conference schedule could lead to more wins and an overall winning record by the end of the season. Their tough Pac-12 slate, however, could limit them to anywhere from 5-9 wins, depending on their games against the middle of the conference.
As for the Cardinal’s postseason prospects, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any additional games after the Pac-12 tournament. There is a very slim chance that they win enough games for an NIT appearance, but beyond that, there is not much hope for a spot in the Big Dance.
This unfortunate outlook does not mean that the Cardinal’s season will be a disappointment. After losing the talent Stanford did, this season should provide an opportunity for the roster to improve and gain experience against the strong competition in the Pac-12. There are no seniors in the main rotation, so this season could be a “warm-up” for a better 2020-21 run.
Another poor season could potentially call Jerrod Haase’s job into question; however, with the roster turnover, he should have at least one additional season to prove he can stay competitive in the Pac-12. That said, a losing record or fewer than five wins against Pac-12 opponents will definitely earn him a rightful spot on the hot seat.
Stanford will not be amazing by any stretch of the imagination, but their promising young players will be fun to watch, especially early on. Fans should approach this season knowing that the team is at least one year away from a return to the Big Dance.
