Season outlook

Ewing has a good, young, talented team that will be nationally relevant (a long time coming for Georgetown fans) as long as those young players show natural progression. The Hoyas have improved every year since Ewing took over the program and, considering this is easily the most talented team he has had, I don’t expect that to suddenly change.

Akinjo has the potential to become a real star, as does McClung. Yurtseven should have improved under Ewing’s tutelage but, if he just provides the offense he did while at NC State, the Hoyas will at least have an adequate replacement for Govan. The offense will be in good hands with those three, while their defense should improve thanks to the length and versatility they have on the wing.

There are finally stakes attached to Georgetown basketball again, and that’s a good thing. At the same time, this is the year where they finally have to make the leap under Ewing. The year-by-year improvement has been great, but he wasn’t hired to win 19 games and make the NIT every season. It’s not quite NCAA-Tournament-or-bust, but it will be a major disappointment if the Hoyas aren’t dancing in March.

By my count, Georgetown should drop no more than two or three games prior to conference play, and I have them third in the Big East behind Villanova and Seton Hall. The Hoyas will be looking at a solid NCAA Tournament seed and potential Sweet 16 run.
