Center

Minutes Breakdown: Matt Haarms (35), Emmanual Dowuona (5)

This one was a little tricky to predict. Where everyone knows that Matt Haarms will be the Boilermakers’ starting center I am not sure how they will rotate the back ups. For the articles purpose we will use the players listed as centers. I would not be amazed to see Trevion Williams also getting some time at the 5 this year.

With that being said lets take a look at the starting center in West Lafayette, Matt Haarms. The 7’0 footer can take over a game in a heart beat, as many Purdue fans saw down in Bloomington last year. His only downside is his weight. He is a very skinny center and can easily be bullied by the more physical post players. However, he is a lot faster than most post players helping him close out and get crucial blocks on the guards or forwards that do get around him.

He averaged about 23 minutes last year, but with only having two true centers on the team he is going to have to play more this year. Adding 12 minutes to his slate may be very ambitious but if he proves to be able to stay on the court that long it will only help Purdue out, as he is one of the best rim protectors in the Big Ten.

Overall Coach Painter will have a lot of decisions to make for the coming season. I do not think it will be an issue for the 2nd best coach in the Big Ten according to  bustingbrackets.com. I would not be surprised to see some experimenting in the early non-conference schedule before figuring out the best rotation for the Big Ten season.
