Big Ten Basketball: Analyzing each program’s 2019 recruiting class
Maryland is one of the most underrated programs in the entire nation. Over the past few years, the Terrapins have been excellent on the recruiting trail and that has led to a solid run of success on the court. The program has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the last five seasons as a No. 6 seed or better in each appearance. Additionally, the program looks poised for an outstanding 2019-20 campaign. Many outlets have pegged the Terps as a preseason top-10 team in the country.
Returning stars account for most of this optimism but Coach Turgeon also has the No. 28 overall recruiting class arriving on campus. Leading the way for this class will be big man Makhi Mitchell. The 6-foot-9 center was ranked at No. 69 in the class and seems poised to start in the frontcourt alongside proven star Jalen Smith. Those two could form a very tough duo to face due to their combined size and length.
Furthermore, Makhel Mitchell will also be joining the program as a 6-foot-9 big. He is not as highly-ranked as his brother (Makhel is at No. 171) but could still be an impact player. Mitchell could be a solid reserve in the frontcourt but there will be plenty of competition. Perhaps most notably, 7-foot-2 Chol Marial (No. 179) is a solid center prospect that could be the primary back-up behind the higher-ranked Mitchell.
On the wing, Donta Scott (No. 145) is a solid prospect capable of being one of the top reserves for Maryland. He brings plenty of size at 6-foot-6 and is an elite athlete. Hakim Hart (No. 465) is the final commit in the class but he likely will not see a ton of playing time this year.
