Big Ten Basketball: Analyzing each program’s 2019 recruiting class
After making the NCAA Tournament for the very first time in 2017, Northwestern has been very disappointing for the last two seasons. Across these most recent campaigns, the Wildcats have put together just a 28-36 (10-28 B1G) record. Additionally, the future does not look all that much better as Northwestern is widely being projected to finish dead-last in the conference this season. They had to say goodbye to several key contributors this offseason and they will need their 58th overall recruiting class to make a significant impact right away.
Most notably, four-star power forward Robbie Beran might need to emerge as a star in his first season on campus. The 6-foot-9 forward comes in ranked as the No. 110 player in the class and will likely find a starting spot immediately. He is a strong rebounder, three-level scorer, and versatile athlete with the ability to play multiple positions. Beran will see plenty of playing time during this coming season and he could be relied on as one of Northwestern’s go-to offensive weapons.
Jared Jones is the other incoming freshman frontcourt option for this team. Jones was ranked as the No. 224 overall prospect and brings a college-ready body to the floor. He excels while working in the paint and is a strong rebounder and defender. It is likely that Jones will share the floor with Beran for plenty of minutes this season in the frontcourt.
Boo Buie might be the lowest-rated commit in this class but he could be the most important for this coming season. Northwestern does not have a true point guard on its roster and Buie fits the build of a contributing playmaker at that spot. There is a reasonable possibility that Buie is one of the first players off the bench for Northwestern this season despite coming in as the No. 327 overall recruit in the country.
