Season Outlook

This is an interesting time to be a Texas Tech fan. There’s no doubt the Red Raiders have the talent to compete with NCAA’s best, but the inexperience could be a cause for concern. Only two players are fully acclimated to Chris Beard’s system — having already played a year at Texas Tech — but both are guards and one of which, Kyler Edwards, will likely be coming off the bench.

But Beard has dealt with constant turnover before. Last year, the head coach returned just one player that saw 20-plus minutes per game (Jarrett Culver) and still brought the Red Raiders to the championship game.

He did so by bringing in transfers and developing younger players like Culver and Moretti. The same rings true this season, as the Red Raiders bring in Chris Clarke and T.J. Holyfield, two physical players that should contribute both on the offensive and defensive end. Both players have also played college basketball for three years  — missing their seniors years due to different seasons — and are seasoned NCAA Tournament veterans.

Tack on Moretti’s experience and ability to run the offense smoothly, and the fact that Texas Tech brings in a star in Ramsey, and Texas Tech will remain a Top 25 team this year. There are some interesting reserves that could make noise, too, as the rotation is definitely still up for interpretation.

Expect another NCAA Tournament for the Red Raiders whose made the Elite Eight the previous two years with Beard at the helm — one of which ended in the National Championship. And who knows, another deep run could be in the future for this talented Texas Tech team, especially if their defense clicks.
