Big East Basketball: Analyzing each program’s 2019 recruiting class
Seton Hall is widely expected to be one of the top teams in the nation during this coming season. The Pirates were a pleasant surprise throughout last year as Myles Powell emerged as a true superstar on the national stage. He is back for another season and that is the main reason for excitement regarding this team. Head coach Kevin Willard will likely turn to his returning core to carry the torch this season once again and therefore his lone 2019 commit is unlikely to major role.
With that said, though, Tyrese Samuel is a very solid commit. The 6-foot-10 forward comes in ranked as the No. 183 overall prospect in the class. He is a strong athlete, can score both inside and out, and rebounds at a relatively high rate as well. To put it simply, Samuel fits the mold of a modern power forward, especially when you consider his impressive wingspan. He should continue to improve on the defensive end in the coming years and will be a solid role player at the very least.
With Sandro Mamukelashvili, Ike Obiagu, and Taurean Thompson (among others) all on the roster for this coming season, though, it will be very difficult for Samuel to crack the rotation. He will likely use this year to continue to develop before emerging as a strong contender for minutes later in his career. There is simply too many returning starters and depth options in the frontcourt for Coach Willard.
