Best NCAA Basketball programs of all-time: 21. Maryland basketball

Maryland has been a bit of a college basketball misfit throughout their history. They were largely overshadowed by those teams on Tobacco Road during their time in the ACC and, while they have found solid footing in the Big Ten, they’re still trying to find their niche in a new conference.

All of that said, this is a program that has accomplished some great things, headlined by the 2002 national championship.

That was the second straight season the Terps made the Final Four, and it’s still the only two times Maryland has made it that far (they also made the Elite Eight in 1973 and 1975). However, that national championship is a big trump card when it comes to comparing them against the other teams that have already appeared on this list.

They don’t have the number of conference championships of some other schools (six regular season, four tournament), but they make up for it in other areas.

Maryland is one of just 18 programs to spend at least 400 weeks ranked in the AP poll and does have 28 NCAA Tournament appearances to their name. They made it to the Sweet 16 in half of those appearances, too.
