Houston Baptist Basketball: In-depth look at star junior guard Ian DuBose
By Bryan Mauro
Expectations for Dubose for 2019-20
Houston Baptist enters the season with much of the same expectations as years past. Those are can the Huskies finish in the top half of the league this year and get a higher seed in the conference tournament. In a one-bid league winning the regular season doesn’t do much for your NCAA tournament hopes, especially if that team has an early exit in the conference tournament. Houston Baptist may have a better season than many expect, especially when realizing that the team led the conference in scoring last season with over points per game. They were not good on the defensive end of the floor and gave up just over 80 points per game as well. That is not a recipe for success.
Houston Baptist is going to need to shore things up on the defensive end if they wish to reach the heights they are capable of. The Huskies are going to get a big man to patrol the middle. Ryan Gomes transferred from Mount Saint Marys before the season began last year and is eligible to play this year. Coach Cottrell is hoping the addition of his transfer big man along with the improvement of the players around DuBose help them on the defensive end.
DuBose has yet to average under 12 points per game in his college career. His freshman year he had a counterpart in David Carraher. Carraher is no longer with the program and Coach Cottrell is still looking for a right-hand man for his star. Some players have emerged who have a good chance to help take the load off the guard’s shoulders. Braxton Bonds and Jalon Gates are the best bets.
Someone is going to have to emerge for DuBose to be at his best. If not, the opponents are going to key on the star and do everything they can to make someone else beat them. If the Huskies are able to shore up some defensive inefficiencies and find another double-digit scorer, they have the ability to be a very dangerous team in the Southland.
