UNC Basketball: Impact of 5-star PG Caleb Love’s commitment to Tar Heels
What Love brings to the Tar Heels
Remember when we were talking about the arms race going on between Duke and Kentucky after they landed two five-star prospects each? Well now it’s North Carolina on top with the current No. 1 recruiting class thanks to Love joining big men Walker Kessler and Day’Ron Sharpe as committed Tar Heels.
That gives them a leading three five-star prospects and they still aren’t done nearly. Ziaire Williams, the top wing in the 2020 class has the Tar Heels as a clear top contender along with Stanford. There’s a real shot for the team to land not only him but also top-10 forward Greg Brown, who most recently visited the program (unofficially). Just like how the recruiting momentum this offseason landed Memphis the No. 1 class, the same could happen to North Carolina even before the season starts.
On the court, this is an even bigger pickup than landing Kessler recently. With Cole Anthony all but gone after this season and fellow freshman Anthony Harris more of an off-guard, Love can come in right away and facilitate the offense. His scoring will be key to replace the upcoming departing production and could very well lead the team on offense between 17-20 ppg for 2020-21. Love will have to get better as a passer with other high-profile mouths to feel but will fit right in with a system coached by Roy Williams that puts their guards in a position to succeed.
North Carolina landed the grad transfers for this upcoming season and including Armando Bacot now has five five-star commits in just the last 18 months. If Coach Williams is slowing down, he’s not showing any signs of it. And what should make rival Duke fans even more nervous is that the Tar Heels still aren’t done yet in what could be a historically good 2020 recruiting class.
