Nebraska – Cam Mack

Chances of winning POY – Slim to none

Picking the best player from Nebraska is hard because the whole roster is new. They are filled with transfers and freshmen. New head coach Fred Hoiberg has retooled the Cornhuskers and it will be interesting to see how things go.

The Cornhuskers are one of the hardest teams to predict this year and that could work to their advantage. Not much is known about many of these guys and how they mesh and grasp Hoiberg’s system will be interesting.

The one thing we do know is that Mack can score. While it was just at Salt Lake Community College he averaged 19.1 points per game and 7.6 assists per game. He can definitely fill up the stat line, but can that translate over to the Big Ten?

He should be helped by another transfer in Haanif Cheatham who is a graduate transfer from Florida Gulf Coast. Before going to FGCU Cheatham was a very productive player at Marquette. He has the talent to be better than Mack and could end up leading this team.

Either one of these players could have been picked for the best shot for a Cornhusker POY, but Mack gets the nod because it is still unsure how Cheatham will bounce back from injury.

They are still both long shots to even be discussed as Nebraska doesn’t appear ready to jump to the next level in the Big Ten, but give it a couple of years and Hoiberg may have them ready.
