Cowboys’ depth will be comprised of newcomers

Because there is little to no depth to speak of for the Cowboys, their roster is littered with newcomers that Boynton will need count on. Boynton has amassed a class he can count on, the 5th best in the Big 12 and ranked 24th nationally according to 247Sports. The Cowboys welcome six freshmen, three guards and three new members of the frontcourt.

The class is led by two four-star guards, 6-6 Marcus Watson from Georgia and 6-2 Avery Anderson III out of Northwest High School in Texas. Anderson should help the Pokes’ point guard depth and turned down offers from the likes of Texas Tech and Florida to play for Oklahoma State. Watson led the No. 1 team in Georgia to a state championship, pouring in 33 points and snatching 10 rebounds in the title game. The other guard is another Texas product, Chris Harris, Jr. is a 6-3 shooting guard who scored over 18 points per game as a senior, making over 45% of his shots.

The frontcourt welcomes the Boone twins from Tulsa, Kalib and Keylan. Kalib is 6-9 205lb. forward who will be asked to patrol the paint and clean up the glass for the Cowboys, having averaged 12.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per contest as a senior at Memorial High School. His brother Keylan measures 6-8 but has more of a perimeter game than his brother, shooting 49% from deep as a senior.

The other freshman forward is a 6-10 210lb. big man from the Netherlands with the ability to play on the perimeter, Hidde Roessink. Boynton was able to grab a forward on the transfer market as Jonathan Laurent joins the program after spending last season at UMass. The 6-6 Laurent averaged 9.5 points and five rebounds last season, but his marksmanship from three-point land is the key for Laurent, his 46.7% made him the top three-point shooter in the Atlantic 10 last season.
