NCAA Basketball: Ranking 2019-20 National Player of the Year candidates
Kentucky is always one of the best teams in the country. Year in and year out, head coach John Calipari puts together one of the best recruiting classes nationwide to carry the program into the next season. With regards to this coming campaign, the Wildcats are once again projected to be a top-10 team behind a few returning pieces and the No. 2 overall recruiting class in the country. Tyrese Maxey is a 6-foot-3 incoming freshman that looks poised to take on the primary scoring role in Lexington this season.
Maxey was ranked as the No. 10 overall recruit in the class and is the highest commit joining UK this season. He brings average size to the backcourt but is absolutely electric with the ball in his hands. The Garland, TX native is uniquely athletic and can fill it up at all three levels. He creates for himself better than just about any newcomer to the college level and also impacts each game in more ways than just scoring.
He is also a dynamic playmaker that limits turnovers. Maxey is very smart with the ball and understands when to create for others and when to take over himself. Maxey brings a ton of energy to the defensive end of the floor and can shut down most opposing guards. You would be hard-pressed to find a more well-rounded guard in the country.
Considering Kentucky is expected to be one of the best teams in the country, they need a representative on this list. At this point, it is difficult to determine who their go-to players will be but I am really high on Maxey’s potential as a scorer and secondary creator next to Ashton Hagans. Watch for him to be a breakout freshman on the national stage.
