Key reserves

Jacob Young

Jacob Young is one of the most highly touted transfers in program history. The guard sat out last season after transferring over from Texas, where he averaged 6.2 points off the bench during his sophomore season. Expect him to quickly take on a major role in the second act of his collegiate career.

Paul Mulcahy

The combo guard could’ve gone to a number of places, but Paul Mulcahy decided to stay home in New Jersey and play for Rutgers. He’s the only true freshman in the Class of 2019 for Pikiell. He’ll likely pivot between the guard spots and small forward.

Shaq Carter

Shaq Carter went the JUCO route before joining Rutgers in time for the 2018-19 season. He showed promise off the bench last season, averaging 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. The former junior college star and current co-captain impressed during the team’s trip to Spain, averaging 16.0 points and 9.3 rebounds over the summer.

Caleb McConnell

Caleb McConnell has been lost in the shuffle, but that doesn’t mean he’s not dangerous off the bench. During his freshman campaign, he averaged 5.5 points off the bench, shooting 35.7 percent from 3-point distance. The versatile guard will look to make an impact defensively as well, where he was fifth among Big Ten freshmen in steals.
