Bottom Line

In Anthony Harris, coach Williams and the Tar Heels are getting an electric two-guard whose speed and shooting touch make him an intriguing complementary piece in the Carolina Break, one who can beat defenders off the ball as a shooter or cutter and who can create plays as a secondary ball-handler.

He is certainly limited, seen in his questionable decision-making and shot selection, but he’s in an environment that works tirelessly to figure out how to get the most out of players’ speed. UNC will let him run, but he still has to hammer out his inconsistencies in order to carve out a significant spot in the rotation.

In the long run, Harris looks to be a highly productive multi-year guard for Roy Williams, who will be able to fit next to whoever he plays with over the next few seasons. Guards who can pass, shoot, and keep the offense moving like him are easy to fit into any lineup. But this year, there are some questions remaining over his availability.

He’s coming off of consecutive years where knee injuries — a broken kneecap before his junior season and a torn left ACL early into his senior season — cost him significant time on the court. UNC sat Harris for the Late Night With Roy blue-white scrimmage (along with fellow rehabbing freshman Jeremiah Francis) for precautionary measures, so it’s certainly possible that the coaching staff takes things slowly, as to not rush him into action too quickly.

But, nonetheless, Anthony Harris will be able to contribute in various ways once he sees the court.
