ACC Basketball: Expectations for each program for 2019-20 season
By Hunter Moore
Virginia
The outlook for this UVA team can go one of two ways. Obviously, they lose a lot of production with the loss of Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome, De’Andre Hunter and Jack Salt. With these losses, they lose about 47.9 ppg, 17.5 rpg and 10 apg, which equates to 66.43% of their scoring, 49.7% of their rebounds and 68.2% of their assists. So a lot of what happens with this team depends on players stepping into bigger roles. Key additions are obviously two top-70 players in Casey Morsell and Kadin Shedrick. Tony Bennett is what separates this UVA team and makes them a likely lock for the NCAA Tournament and slightly better than the middle of the pack but don’t be surprised if this team isn’t top five or six in the conference this season.
Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech is coming off of one of the best seasons in program history, where they made the Sweet 16 before ultimately losing to conference foe Duke 75-73. That will not be the result this season as they lose just about everyone including their coach Buzz Williams. In comes Mike Young who looks to build a powerhouse at Virginia Tech in the next few years, after having some big recruiting wins in both the 2019 and 2020 where he currently has two top 100 recruits committed. The goal for the Hokies this season should be to not finish dead last in conference play.
Wake Forest
Will this be Danny Manning’s last season in Winston-Salem? After three of the four have resulted in 11-20 seasons this seems like a likely option if things go south once again. Not many pieces on this team are gifted players besides Brandon Childress and Andrien White(transfer from UNC Charlotte).
This season will likely be the Childress and White show all year long and if they get hot it could lead to a couple of upsets. With expectations of being a bottom-third team the future isn’t looking too bright for Danny Manning.
