NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 353 D-I head coaches for 2019-20 season
By Joey Loose
330. Byron Rimm (IUPUI) (Last year: N/A)
- Overall record: 115-192
The surprise firing of Jason Gardner after a DUI led Rimm to the interim head coaching job for this season. Rimm previously spent a decade at Prairie View A&M and brings plenty of coaching experience to the Jaguars moving forward. After spending last season on the staff, his familiarity with the team will help them move on, even if he didn’t have the most successful tenure with the Panthers.
329. Joe Gallo (Merrimack) (Last year: N/A)
- Overall record: 0-0
Gallo led Merrimack to three straight D2 NCAA Tournaments, but this is an entirely different animal. The team joins Division 1 and the NEC this season and there will likely be growing pains. A former Merrimack player and assistant himself, Gallo got D1 experience as an assistant at Dartmouth and Robert Morris. Now he’s running the show at the newest D1 program; how will they fare in their adjustment to a new conference and new level of opponents?
328. Eric Henderson (South Dakota State) (Last year: N/A)
- Overall record: 0-0
Henderson begins his head coaching career with the Jackrabbits after spending the last three years as an assistant to TJ Otzelberger. This team has become a dominant force in the Summit League and the continuity that Henderson brings can only help that continue. He’s very familiar with the program and conference and has seen first-hand what it takes to get the job done. That being said, we can’t just expect instantaneously results from Henderson’s program.
327. David McLaughlin (Dartmouth) (Last year: 338)
- Overall record: 25-59
Sixty years have passed since Dartmouth has made the NCAA Tournament and McLaughlin doesn’t exactly have the Big Green trending in a direction to break that streak. He’s finished last place twice in his first three seasons at Dartmouth. McLaughlin also has valuable D2 experience at Stonehill, though the Ivy League is clearly a different animal. On the positive, he did improve to 11 wins last season, perhaps another increase is in the future.
326. Dan Earl (VMI) (Last year: 343)
- Overall record: 35-87
A former point guard at Penn State, Earl is four years into his tenure at VMI and the results have not been pretty. Earl returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach before following Ed DeChellis to Navy. He’s lost at least 21 games and finished no higher than 8th in every season with the Keydets. The struggles have been real and show no signs of stopping for a program over four decades removed from the NCAA Tournament.
325. Amir Abdur-Rahim (Kennesaw State) (Last year: N/A)
- Overall record: 0-0
Following success as an assistant coach, Abdur-Rahim accepted his first head coaching position this past spring at Kennesaw State. He played and coached under Billy Kennedy, including four seasons at Texas A&M before spending last year rebuilding Georgia. The Owls have yet to achieve success since joining D1 and Abdur-Rahim may be exactly the kind of young, motivated coach they need to turn the tide.
324. Carmen Maciariello (Siena) (Last year: N/A)
- Overall record: 0-0
Maciariello who played one season at Siena nearly two decades ago assumes the position as head coach after Jamion Christian’s exodus. Maciariello has experience with the Saints and in the area, also assisting at Fairfield, Boston University and George Washington in recent years. This Siena program should be in solid shape to take a step forward with their returning talent and promoting Maciariello was the perfect move to keep a promising team intact.
323. Donyell Marshall (Central Connecticut State) (Last year: 306)
- Overall record: 31-61
Known for his 15 years as an NBA forward, Marshall will begin his fourth year at Central Connecticut with plenty of work left to do. He’s been an assistant coach in the D-League and at schools like George Washington and Buffalo but his first head coaching stint is off to a slow start. He’s won only about 10 games a season and finished last in the NEC last season. Landing a coach with his NBA pedigree doesn’t always happen in the NEC, but results are going to be needed in these next couple of seasons.
322. Murray Garvin (South Carolina State) (Last year: 340)
- Overall record: 70-133
Garvin has spent six and a half seasons at South Carolina State’s head coach, though it’s been a struggle for nearly all of that tenure. A former junior college head coach, Garvin led this team to 19 wins and a CIT bid in 2016, but that’s the lone bright spot. His Bulldogs have not won more than 11 games or finished higher than seventh in the MEAC in any of his other seasons, a trend that will probably continue this season.
321. Brian Collins (Tennessee State) (Last year: 329)
- Overall record: 9-21
A Tennessee native himself, Collins enters his second season at Tennessee State with his eyes on a bigger prize moving forward. He’s formerly been a junior college head coach and an assistant at ETSU and Illinois State in recent years. He quickly turned around Columbia State CC, though winning in the OVC is a bit of a different animal. Expect progress from their 9-win debut, Collins is a talented young head coach.
