NCAA Basketball: Will Evansville become mid-major star of 2019-20?
By Connor Gluck
Chances that we see Evansville in the Big Dance this year?
So how likely does a postseason Cinderella story look for the Purple Aces? Certainly, they now have much better odds than they did to start the season. But further than that it would be a stretch to make a hard commitment to saying one way or the other what their future will be. It is still too early, and their one big win may end up being just that.
But, as discussed, Evansville certainly has the talent and coaching and will have the experience needed to make a postseason run. As long as they keep their focus, and aren’t satisfied with being just a flash in the pan, the Purple Aces should be perfectly capable of making some noise in March.
In the MVC, Evansville should expect to be very competitive. The Aces will likely finish at or near the top of the conference and put themselves in very good position in the conference tournament. Even with the fantastic resume win over Kentucky, Evansville will almost definitely need to win the automatic bid to make the NCAA Tournament.
Assuming they do so, their ability to make a run in the big dance will be dependent on match-ups and a little bit of luck. If they are able to draw a good seeding and face a team that doesn’t have a fantastic front-court, look for the Purple Aces to pull out a win or two.
Evansville has already earned the national spotlight and a place in the history books. Predicting their postseason outlook with any sort of certainty is impossible, and why we love college basketball. But, while it is certainly not guaranteed, they should be able to go dancing and keep the legend going a little while longer.
