Lutete’s 51-point outburst leads top individual performances

UMass Lowell senior Christian Lutete exploded for 51 points in the River Hawks 87-74 win at Long Island University. Lutete shot 16-25 from the field, hit seven of his 12 three-point attempts, and went 12 for 13 from the free throw line. He also added nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals for good measure.

It was the highest-scoring outburst of any player across the nation so far this year. Joining Lutete on the 40-plus points list from mid-major schools: Eastern Kentucky sophomore Jomaru Brown with 41 in a 79-71 loss to Western Kentucky, Idaho State junior Tarik Cool with 41 in an 89-79 win at Air Force, and Curtis Cobb III with 40 points in a Wagner win over non-DI Wesley.

Colorado State senior Nico Carvacho nearly notched a 20-20 game with 21 points, 19 rebounds, and five assists in a win over Omaha. Expect him to show up a lot in this section this season.

The most impressive cumulative performance so far this season is probably from Northeastern’s Jordan Roland. He is currently leading the nation in scoring at 31 points per game and has two of the highest-scoring outings from the season so far: 39 points in a win at Boston and 40 points in a win over a banged-up Harvard. Those were also his first two games of the season.
