Big East Basketball Power Rankings: DePaul, Butler exceeding expectations
Georgetown has arguably been the biggest disappointment in the Big East through the first two weeks of the season. I was not all that high on the Hoyas to begin with and they have not given me a reason to bump them up the rankings with their actual play on the court. While transfer big man Omer Yurtseven looks solid with his 17.0 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game averages, the team has struggled as a whole. This was especially evident when Penn State absolutely eviscerated Georgetown in the Capital One Arena. While it appears as though the Nittany Lions might actually just be a good team this season, that was a rough performance by the Hoyas.
It is also important to mention, though, that Georgetown’s loss to PSU was not their only lackluster game in the first two weeks. The Hoyas might be 3-0 in all other games but only exhibited a +10.7 scoring differential in those victories despite facing teams with an average KenPom ranking of 232.7. Speaking of KenPom, Georgetown entered this season with a conservative ranking of No. 55 in the nation. Many believed that this was underrating the Hoyas but the team has already plummeted down 15 spots by virtue of their poor play to this point.
Georgetown’s adjusted efficiency margin change of -2.93 since opening day is the seventh-worst among all high-major teams.
Looking ahead, there is still talent on this roster with plenty of games remaining to turn the corner. After all, the Hoyas are only four contests into the season. Georgetown fans can be concerned, but it’s not yet time to panic. In order for the Hoyas to reach their potential, they need to do a much better job taking care of the ball offensively while improving their play beyond the 3-point arc on both ends of the floor.
