Villanova Basketball: Keys to success against Baylor in Myrtle Beach Final
2. Remain diligent on the defensive glass.
Villanova’s strengths appear to lie in the frontcourt this season. Star freshman Robinson-Earl is at the core of this but the returns of Jermaine Samuels and Bey should be overlooked, either. That trio is one of the best in the entire country and that goes without mentioning an elite sixth man in Swider. A 6-foot-9 sharpshooting sophomore, Swider struggled last season but has thrived with renewed health and confidence this time around. With these players leading the way, Villanova is ranked 33rd in the country in defensive rebounding rate (77.9%) through five games.
With regard to this particular matchup, though, the Wildcats could have a difficult time continuing their excellence in this facet of the game. This is due to the fact that Baylor’s slightly undersized unit plays well above its height with incredible physicality. The Bears are currently ranked 17th in the nation in offensive rebounding rate (37.9%). Freddie Gillespie has been the most notable individual contributor in this area for Baylor but I would be remiss to not mention the efforts of star junior Tristan Clark.
Baylor thrives on second-chance opportunities and Villanova will need to slow down that aspect of their game. The Wildcats will need to control the possession advantage in this game and dominating on the glass will be vital to success. There are going to be several long rebounds in this game as a result of both teams exhibiting a high 3PAr and chasing down those loose balls further from the basket will be crucial.
