2) Contain Myles Powell

Obviously, stopping Myles Powell completely is nearly impossible to do, but Payton Pritchard, Anthony Mathis and Will Richardson must give their best effort to make his life miserable. If Powell has to work harder to get his points, it means that Seton Hall will either have to rely more on their role players or Powell has to take more shots for his 25 points.

No matter which path they take, the Pirates will be at a huge disadvantage if Powell’s efficiency is frustrated. This means running him off the line and forcing him to score in the paint around Shakur Juiston and Francis Okoro. Powell shoots an almost identical percentage inside as he does on the perimeter, which means his efficiency will certainly dip.

However, contesting Powell’s shots will not make a difference if Oregon does not also take away his passing lanes. Defending him and forcing him into double teams will open up the floor for his teammates, so Oregon will need to ensure he can’t simply pass the ball to another shooter. Oregon has the length to do this, but they haven’t forced a ton of turnovers to date.

If Powell is contained and his efficiency drops, the Ducks might just hold the Pirates to under 75 points. They will still need to find ways to score points in bunches, but at least they won’t need to score 90 points in order to win. This is where Anthony Mathis will have his chance to make a real difference.
