Pac-12 Basketball: 2019-20 power rankings Feast Week edition
By Connor Hope
2) Arizona Wildcats
Preseason Ranking: 2
Record: 5-0
Notable Result: 90-69 Home Win vs Illinois
With two teams holding legitimate claims as the best team in the Pac-12, Arizona’s lack of a true marquee win drops them into the second spot. There is a strong case to be made for Arizona’s roster having one of the highest ceilings in the country, with the freshman trio of Nico Mannion, Zeke Naji, and Josh Green leading the way.
If there is any criticism that can be made of the Wildcats, it is of their interior play, specifically their work on the boards. No player is averaging more than seven rebounds per game, and the team is struggling to outrebound much smaller teams. This may be another Sweet Sixteen bound team for Head Coach Sean Miller, which would be a massive turnaround from last season’s rebuilding performance.
1) Oregon Ducks
Preseason Ranking: 1
Record: 5-0
Notable Result: 82-74 Neural Site Win vs Memphis
Most people wouldn’t argue against Oregon as the best Pac-12 team so far this season. With wins over Houston and Memphis, the Ducks have beaten two legitimate second-weekend contenders. Payton Pritchard has been the conference’s top performer so far, and the new additions have all contributed well to the team’s success.
It wasn’t just the win over Memphis that was impressive, but how the Ducks managed to control the entire game outside of a few minutes span after Chris Duarte went down with an injury in the first half. Anthony Mathis is shooting nearly 65% from three, and Shakur Juiston is contributing in a bunch of different ways. This Ducks team isn’t one to look ahead, but it would not be surprising to see this team playing in April and contending for the National Championship.
