Powell will need to overcome physical and defensive limitations

The NBA seems to have moved past the days of worrying about “tweeners” or guys who did not have a defined position.

With the new emphasis on spacing and positionless basketball, the physical profiles of players no matter seem to hold as much emphasis as they used too. Still, teams tend to fall in love with upside, physical attributes and potential come June. That is not good news for Myles Powell.

At the next level, Powell projects as a ball-handling guard. At six-foot-two inches and 195 pounds, Powell is most definitely going to be a below the rim player. Those measurements, combined with his age (coming up on 23 by draft time) will not necessarily appeal to teams at the next level.

If Powell wants to get drafted and stick, he will have to give an all-out effort every possession on defense. Powell has flashed solid instincts (2.0 steals per game as a junior), but consistency will be the key for him moving forward.

Giving his small stature he will have to ensure that teams cannot target him on that end of the floor and that he can keep his man in front of him in isolation situations.

If Powell can shore up the concerns on that end of the ball this season or in the pre-draft process, he would do himself a big favor in terms of his chances to be drafted next June.
