Virginia – Sell

This is a sell as of now, but this subject is something that is going to be talked about all year. It is a sell right now because Virginia has shown that they can win a ton of games playing exactly the way they are playing right now. Don’t over-analyze what the Cavaliers are doing, they are still winning games and they have shown this year against teams like Vermont. They can still score when they need to win games.

Any time an offense loses players like Kyle Guy, DeAndre Hunter and Ty Jerome they are going to struggle the next year. The offense still has Mamadi Diakite, Jay Huff and point guard Kihei Clark. Those players have never had to shoulder an offensive load over their careers in college and once they get comfortable with that the points will come. The argument of “well that style doesn’t work in March” has been dispelled they did win the NCAA tournament last year.

One thing that Tony Bennett coached teams have always been able to do is coach defense. To win games and championships you must keep the other team from scoring. Virginia is elite on the defensive end even this year. Right now, their lack of ability to consistently put the ball in the basket is something the Cavaliers are going to have to work on. The fact remains that teams still can not score on Virginia.

Since this writing is only looking at the resumes of the teams up to now the lack of offense is not concerning. Coach Bennett still has a top-10 team and a team that already has two wins over potential tournament teams this year. Until the opponents can prove they can score, the Cavaliers won’t need to.
