NCAA Basketball: Myles Powell leads early 2019-20 National Player of the Year race
By Brian Rauf
As good as Winston, Anthony, and the rest of the players on this list have been, Powell has clearly established himself as the best player in the country throughout the season’s first month.
He has guided Seton Hall to a 6-2 record but both losses came against ranked teams (Michigan State, Oregon) and were by a combined five points. Those losses weren’t because of Powell, either, has he dropped 37 points against Michigan State and 32 against Oregon, clearly outplaying Cassius Winston and Payton Pritchard in both games.
If you leave out the game against Stony Brook in which Powell didn’t score in four minutes before spraining his ankle, he’s averaging 26.7 ppg – a number that would lead the nation (official stats count that zero-point outing against the Seawolves, dropping his average to 23.4 ppg).
His consistent second-half takeovers have turned every game into must-see TV (just ask Twitter) and was the biggest star in a loaded Battle 4 Atlantis field, setting a tournament record for points in the event.
Thanks to an extremely tough non-conference schedule, Powell will have high-profile stages to perform against Iowa State (again) and No. 3 Maryland before starting conference play.
The 6-2 sharpshooter has taken over every game he’s played this season and has been at his best against the best competition he has faced. Powell has clearly made the biggest impact to this point, making him the clear early National Player of the Year frontrunner.
