NCAA Basketball: Myles Powell leads early 2019-20 National Player of the Year race

Azubuike gets the nod over Toppin because he outplayed the Dayton star in the Maui Invitational title game between the two, dominating down low to the tune of 29 points and four blocks while making every big play Kansas needed him to down the stretch.
The seven-footer has been somewhat held in check this season as he only had one 20-point game prior to that outburst against the Flyers as Kansas has tried to figure out their big man rotation, and the foul trouble he got into against Duke in the Champions Classic didn’t help matters.
But he took advantage of the stage at the Maui Invitational and had as big of an impact as you could’ve wanted.
Now, this spot is far from secure. Azubuike will need to follow up his performance against the Flyers with a big game against Colorado this week along with dominant showings against Villanova and Stanford later this month, but the big man put himself back in the mix against Dayton.
