3. Terrence Shannon having a breakout game

Ramsey was the historical prospect in the Red Raiders 2019 recruiting class, ranked by 247sportsComposite as the highest-ever rated incoming freshman. And stats previously mentioned, he’s been as good as advertised. But there was another big-time pickup for Texas Tech in Terrence Shannon, a top-100 wing who at one point was actually committed to DePaul. When defected in August of 2018, the Red Raiders were one of the first teams after him; eventually paying off with his signature.

It’s been a very solid start for Shannon, averaging 9.9 ppg and 4.0 rpg as a starter. His shooting numbers haven’t been the greatest but he’s been good on the defensive end and consistent overall with his production. But with Ramsey possibly out for this contest, Texas Tech will need him to have a big impact on the game.

What the Red Raiders can do to help out the freshman is getting him involved early and often on the offensive end. He’s shown an ability to get to the free throw line, already having three different games of going 7/8. If Shannon can get some perimeter shots to go down, it’ll open things up for both him and his teammates on the floor.

He’ll also have to come up big on the defensive end, likely going to be matched up with junior power forward Jaylen Butz and another covered freshman recruit in Romeo Weems. Like Holyfield, Shannon can’t afford to get into foul trouble to the Blue Demons and will likely have to go 30+ minutes in this game.

With Ramsey not likely to be in the picture, this is a tremendous opportunity for the other key freshman to have his big moment – and in the process, keep Texas Tech is a solid spot overall. Good thing the Red Raiders have a nice recent history of freshman players stepping up in big games.
