Louisville definitely looks the part of being one of the best teams in the entire country. After dominating lower-level opponents for the first few weeks of the season, the Cardinals experienced their first major test of the season during this past week when Michigan came to the KFC Yum! Center. And from the opening tip of that game, Louisville made it clear that it was the better team while dominating on both ends en route to a 15-point victory. Head coach Chris Mack’s team now holds the No. 1 spot in KenPom and can make a very legitimate argument for the top overall seed in this field.
Purdue, though, might have posted the most impressive win of the week while playing host to Virginia. Seemingly from the jump, the Boilermakers turned that game into a 3-point shooting competition and it was an incredible strategy because of their advantage in that facet. Sophomore guard Sasha Stefanovic lit up from three on 6-for-10 shooting himself while Virginia shot just 4-for-24. Shooting woes for the Cavaliers continue to cause them problems and the Boilermakers deserve credit for their gameplan leading to a 29-point beatdown of the defending national champions.
Speaking of last season’s title game, though, it is not just Virginia that struggled during this past week. Texas Tech, the national runner-up, has looked…well…bad so far this season. After playing five straight sub-240 opponents to begin the season undefeated, the Red Raiders have lost three consecutive games (all away from home) to high-major opponents in Iowa, Creighton, and DePaul. The Red Raiders have some growing to do on both ends of the floor, that much is obvious. Their defense is not at elite levels yet and the offense has a long way to go.
