NBA Draft 2020: Top 4 prospects separate themselves in latest mock draft
By Brian Rauf
The Hornets have been one of the NBA’s biggest surprises this year but could still use some upgrades in some areas. Perhaps the biggest is finding more backcourt depth, particularly a defensive stopper on the perimeter. Enter Lewis, who is one of the best athletes in the draft (him and Miles Bridges on the fast break would be FUN) and one of it’s best defenders at 6-5 with a 6-10 wingspan.
Sacramento has a quality starting backcourt in De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield, but they have suspect depth behind them. Maledon has the size (6-4) to play either position and, while he’s still in the early stages of his development as a player, is a good playmaker who takes care of the ball. He isn’t the best shooter, but he has a good deal of upside.
The Thunder are essentially starting over, so landing a top-five talent at No. 13 would be incredible for them. McDaniels has the tools to be a star – he’s 6-10 with a smooth offensive game, can handle the ball, and shoot from the perimeter – but a lack of aggressiveness and consistency have kept those tools from being on full display at Washington. He also desperately needs to get stronger (only listed at 200 pounds), yet Oklahoma City is in prime position to take a flyer on his upside.
Portland is set at most positions. Their backcourt is locked up long-term, Carmelo Anthony is still producing on the wing, and they have some solid frontcourt players in Zach Collins and Jusuf Nurkic. What they lack is depth behind those two big men, and Carey can provide that for them. The Duke big man has been one of the most productive players in college basketball his season thanks to his post dominance and surprising shooting range.
An undersized shooting guard from Kentucky, Maxey is a bona fide scorer who can fill it up from every level. Phoenix already has one of the league’s best scorers in Devin Booker, but they don’t have a lot of pop coming off their bench. Maxey could provide that while flanked by shooters in Ty Jerome, Mikal Bridges, and Cameron Johnson.
