Big 12 Basketball power rankings: Kansas, Baylor clear above others
With the huge amount of roster turnover this offseason, it really was a wait-and-see approach with TCU Basketball. This was a projected preseason bottom-tier team in the Big 12 and through eight games… nothing has changed that perception. To date, their best wins are against UC Irvine and Illinois State, with a bad loss to Clemson as well.
The one player on the roster with no questions coming into the season was Desmond Bane. And he’s been as good as advertised, averaging 18.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 3.1 apg. Big man Kevin Samuel has been solid as a sophomore, putting up 12.1 ppg and 8.8 rpg. And while he’s not the same kind of passer that all-time TCU leader Alex Robinson, RJ Nembhard (3.3 apg) has been steady as the team’s key facilitator.
The rest of the roster is where all the questions are at. Many of the other rotation players are transfers from other teams, including Jaire Grayer, Edric Dennis and Jaedon LeDee. Collectively, they’ve been solid but hasn’t been good enough to elevate the Horned Frogs to a higher level. Defensively, TCU has struggled from three-point range (339th) and will need to improve that in order to be competitive in Big 12 play.
