3. Houston Cougars

Cougars were co-favorites to win the AAC in the Coaches Poll but haven’t exactly looked the part to start the season. While they’re sitting at 6-2 with a loss to nationally ranked Oregon and a buzzer-beater to BYU, Houston hasn’t exactly been convincing in the games they should be winning no problem.

Houston doesn’t have any eye-popping wins on their resume and is going to have to play well in conference play. They’ll face Oklahoma State this coming weekend, the Cowboys have been good this year and assuming Likekele plays this would be big for Houston.

Houston is top 35 in the country in points per game and has an impressive five players averaging double figures, Houston is balanced and will only get better over time under Kelvin Sampson. Kansas transfer Quentin Grimes leads the way averaging close to 17 points per game. Freshman Caleb Mills has had a good start and is another guy that’s only going to get better the more minutes he plays. The future of Houston basketball looks very promising with him.

Houston opens up conference play with UCF, all eyes will be on Houston when they face Memphis twice in about two weeks at the end of February. Cougars are still players in this conference despite beating relatively unproven at this point.
