AAC Basketball Power Rankings: Memphis holds top spot, Cincinnati Struggles
1. Memphis Tigers
The Tigers have been under the microscope at the beginning of the season with the James Wiseman suspension. Memphis is unbeaten without Wiseman and has dropped just one game this year to nationally ranked Oregon. Memphis will take on Tennessee in a big game for both programs this weekend.
Precious Achiuwa has stepped in big time for the Tigers, he’s their leading scorer outside of Wiseman with 13 points per game. This team is comprised of all underclassmen and Penny has them okaying well. Wiseman takes them to another level, prior to his suspension he’s averaging 19.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He’s largely viewed as the number one pick in the 2020 NBA draft.
Even if the Tigers lose to Tennessee it’s hard to doubt them without Wiseman, Memphis right now looks like they’re the best team in the conference. Like others, the more minutes these freshmen get the better they’re going to get.
Memphis will play two conference games without Wiseman, Tulane and Wichita State. Wiseman will be back on January 12th for the game against South Florida. The Tigers look like a lock to make the tournament at this point. Penny Hardaway and his youngsters are going to be a team no one is going to want to play when it comes to tournament time.
