Breakdown of Bench Minutes

This is the first time in a long time that we have seen Coach K use more than eight players per game. For example, on Thursday night against Wofford 11 players saw the court and this was without Tre Jones who missed the game due to injury.

This is quite remarkable considering the fact that Coach K is known for only using eight players at the most. So with all that being said, who would get minutes off the bench with the starting lineup of Jones, Stanley, Baker, Hurt and Carey?

These are the five players who will see the court each and every game, in some games you should expect to see Justin Robinson get some time as well who has gotten more minutes as of late, including the five he got on Thursday night.

Each of these five players play a different role for Duke, Jordan Goldwire is known for his defensive presence, Wendell Moore is a paint presence, Javin DeLaurier is a big man, Jack White is known for his hustle and Alex O’Connell is capable of helping the Blue Devils on both ends as well.

With 76 minutes being allotted to the bench based off of my minute breakdown here is how I see those being distributed:

  • Wendell Moore: 20 minutes
  • Jordan Goldwire: 13 minutes
  • Jack White: 16 minutes
  • Javin DeLaurier: 16 minutes
  • Alex O’Connell: 11 minutes

With this distribution of minutes, Duke could use several intriguing combinations of players. For example, a backcourt of Tre Jones and Jordan Goldwire is one that would give opposing teams a lot of trouble on the offensive end as both Jones and Goldwire are great on defense.

Duke is a very deep team this season and Coach K is using his roster in a different way each and every game and I wouldn’t expect that to change any time soon.
