3. Eastern is still the favorite

Eastern has not done anything to knock themselves off as the Big Sky “slight” favorite.  After being blown out at the AP #1 team, Gonzaga (13-1), by the score of 112-77, the Eagles took care of business against Weber State.

After starting cold and trailing 8-0 to the Wildcats, the Eagles overcame the fact that two of their top scorers were limited due to foul trouble to take a 16–point lead early in the second half and hold on the to the road win.

Meanwhile, another team laying claim to being the favorite, Northern Colorado, dropped their opener on the road to Portland State.  Although the Bears will bounce back, this was not the start that the team was hoping.

Montana struggled early at home against #267 Northern Arizona (6-4, 0-1) before dominating the second half in a 79-72 win. The Griz, trying to be only the second team to ever win three consecutive Big Sky championship, would hope for a more impressive outing in their conference opener.

Southern Utah will not open conference play until Monday, Dec. 30, at Portland State.  The Vikings aren’t done in knocking off some of the top teams and that game should be a toss-up.

Although Eastern is still the favorite because of their multiple scoring threats, there are four other teams right there and the regular-season championship will come down to the final week of Big Sky play.
