9. Davidson Wildcats

Record: 6-5

The Wildcats of Davidson were voted as the second toughest team in the Atlantic 10 at the beginning of the season. As they now find themselves with five losses before conference play begins, it seems highly unlikely that they will be the second-best team in the league.

The other schools around them in the Atlantic 10 are performing well, while others have played better than expected. The race at the top seems like it will be between VCU and Dayton, but Richmond, Duquesne, and George Mason have all been very impressive in the non-conference.

In the non-conference portion of the season, Davidson has lost to Auburn, Charlotte, Wake Forest, Marquette, and Temple. This Davidson squad that hasn’t shown much may have issues when facing the ambitious teams of the Atlantic 10 that are performing at a higher level than they were told they would.

Many of Davidson’s issues have been on the offensive end of the floor. Junior guard, Kellan Grady has done much of the work for them offensively, averaging 16.1 ppg. Guards Jon Axel Gudmundsson, Carter Collins, and Luke Frampton average 11.6, 10.5, and 9.8 ppg, respectively.

The guards being forced to provide much of their offensive production goes to show that the frontcourt may be a real problem. With such a guard-heavy line-up, they have had problems against teams with a solid frontcourt. In their 76-66 loss to Auburn, Auburn’s size was a huge issue. The talented and experienced frontcourt of Auburn scored 48 of their 76 points.

This issue may not be an easy fix, but Davidson must step up on offense and defense against larger teams in order to be competitive.
