6. College of Charleston Cougars

Record: 7-6

This College of Charleston team led by Head Coach, Earl Grant, and senior guard, Grant Riller, was picked by many as the favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association and earn the NCAA Tournament berth. It seemed like odd placement given that they lost a lot of frontcourt skill when they lost Jarrell Brantley. Everyone still thought Riller and the backcourt would be enough to allow the Cougars to be one of the best mid-majors in NCAA Basketball

After 12 games, they find themselves with a dead even, 6-6 record. It is pretty clear that there is not much to this team beyond Grant Riller, who leads the team in scoring with 21.0 ppg. All of Charleston’s opponents have found that if you can contain Riller enough, then they are not enough other options they can look to for scoring.

Charleston’s losing began with a 73-54 defeat on their home floor to a solid Oklahoma State team that is surprising people with their great play. Since then, they have lost to UCF twice, Wake Forest, Richmond, and VCU.

Now, these are some good teams they have lost to, but the way this team has been talked about, it seemed as if Charleston would put up more of a fight in these games. I even thought they might win a few of them.

On the bright side, as the Cougars head into conference play, they are battle-tested and know exactly what needs to be done against teams in their league that are not quite as talented as the teams they have faced.

They may end up being okay, but other guys need to step up with Grant Riller in order for them to be a threatening team when the NCAA Tournament rolls around.
