5. Providence Friars

Record: 7-6

After finishing the 2018-19 NCAA basketball season with an overall record of 18-16 and losing to Arkansas in the first round of the NIT, it was thought that things might turn around for Providence this season.

Led by a very talented senior guard in Alpha Diallo, Head Coach Ed Cooley’s team would surely be better than 7-6 at this point in the season. Diallo is playing well, leading the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.1 ppg and 9.2 rpg. In addition to Diallo, Providence possesses a deep rotation; however, the struggle has been finding the right personnel to step up and score consistently.

The issues the Friars have faced go all the way back to very early in the season. Their first loss was handed to them by a very bad Northwestern squad. They have also suffered bad losses at the hands of Pennsylvania, College of Charleston, Long Beach State, Rhode Island, and Florida. Two of those squads are mentioned on this list, and the others just are not the best.

Things are clearly not good for Providence, and in all honesty, Ed Cooley may be in major trouble. To get out of this, they must continue to utilize their depth but find more reliable and consistent scoring options.

With that, I do not think they will be able to successfully turn things around in Big East play. The rest of the conference looks to be at an entirely different level.
