NCAA Basketball: ACC struggles, Gonzaga dropping, and more takeaways

8) Romaro Gill’s play has unlocked Seton Hall’s potential
Seton Hall was expected to be at the top of the Big East but injuries to Myles Powell and Sandro Mamukelashvili, along with inconsistent play, caused them to limp to a 6-4 start that was highlighted by a 20-point loss to Rutgers.
However, the Pirates have gone 4-0 since then with wins over Maryland, DePaul, and Georgetown, and the way Romaro Gill has stepped up has played a major role in that turnaround. Seton Hall needed someone other than Powell to produce consistently and the 7-2 big man has delivered in Mamukelashvili’s absence.
Against Maryland, he anchored the defense with six blocks. Against DePaul, he had four along with six points. Against Georgetown, Gill had the best game of his career with 17 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
Powell will be Seton Hall’s leader and best offensive player, and there’s no question about that. But having Gill playing as this kind of anchor on defense – plus the offense he can provide in the pick and roll – takes the Pirates to a new level.
