Big East Basketball Power Rankings: Providence, SJU trending oppositely
Georgetown struggled a bit out of the gates in conference play with back-to-back road losses to Providence and Seton Hall. As I have mentioned throughout this season, winning away-from-home is going to be very difficult in the Big East and GTown’s losses can be forgiven a bit as a result. This is especially true considering the Hoyas returned home to handle their business in a big way against St. John’s as a response.
With that 19-point win over the Red Storm, the Hoyas moved to 1-2 in conference play and asserted that they are not in the bottom tier of the league. Even without a ton of depth, the team has shown signs of fight early in the Big East schedule. I am not a long-term believer in the Hoyas but they do look the part of being a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament. Their offense is quite solid and they can dominate the glass. Defense remains an issue.
After losing several pieces earlier in the year, Mac McClung and Omer Yurtseven have stepped up to carry the offense. Both players are averaging 16+ points per game. McClung is the one recording the highlight-reel plays but Yurtseven is quietly nearly posting a double-double. They are the only two players averaging in double-figures as scorers but they are not the only key pieces.
Jagan Mosely is another Hoya worth mentioning moving forward. The 6-foot-3 senior is supplying 7.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and excellent defense as an all-around contributor in the rotation. Mosely is a huge piece for this team and is massively underrated.
