Washington Basketball: 2019-20 takeaways from OT home loss against Oregon
2. Isaiah Stewart continues to carry this team on his back
There is nothing new here. Stewart has carried this team all season.
Going into the game against the Ducks, Stewart averaged 17.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg, and 2.1 blocks. He has the third-highest scoring average by a freshman in the country. Against Oregon, he finished with 25 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocks despite constantly being double-teamed.
Stewart needs to have fellow freshman, Jaden McDaniels, to be all he can be to relieve the pressure on Stewart. After missing the Oregon State game due to an ankle injury, McDaniels has a quiet game against the Ducks. He only scored five points, eight rebounds, with three blocks. He is also averaging 3.4 turnovers per game.
In addition, Stewart could benefit from a penetrating guard. None of Green’s replacements have driven the lane with a dish to the big man. Against Oregon, the Huskies only had six assists as a team to go along with 13 turnovers. Most of those turnovers came from errant lobs into the double-teamed Stewart and not from penetration.
Stewart also needs to stay out of foul trouble going forward. A reason for his big numbers against the Ducks was that he only committed one foul and was able to log 43 minutes. He has been battling foul trouble this season and fouled out of his fourth game on Thursday against Oregon State.
