Big 12 Basketball power rankings: How far will West Virginia fall?
By Trenton Corn
8. TCU Horned Frogs
TCU is 12-5, but have lost two straight games to West Virginia and Oklahoma, where one game they didn’t score 50, and the other they got blew out by 20. In my opinion, TCU’s early-season schedule was a rather easy one, including their Big-12 schedule, as they faced of against the Big-12’s worst teams early on in conference play.
They play Texas Tech and Arkansas next week, two very tough opponents that will both go dancing this season.
TCU has three things going for them this week. One, Desmond Bane is on their team. He’s one of the Big-12’s premier scorers and will have to carry this TCU squad if they want to stay afloat in the Big-12 standings. Two, their game against Texas Tech is at home, a place the Horned Frogs are 10-2 this season. TCU’s chances of beating the Red Raiders go up dramatically with them being at home. Three, Arkansas is the TCU of the SEC. They really haven’t played anyone early this season from out of conference play, to early conference play outside of LSU. It’ll be interesting to see how both of these teams stack up.
My prediction: TCU drops their game to Texas Tech, but sneaks away with a win against Arkansas.
7. Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State is 8-9, with one win in the Big-12 compared to four losses. Their lone win was against a strong OU squad, where they couldn’t miss, as they thrashed Oklahoma 81-68. Their two losses in a row were on the road (where they’re 0-4 this season) as they lost to Baylor 68-55, and Texas Tech 72-52. This Iowa State team has beat Seton Hall, Alabama, and has played with Michigan this season thanks mostly impart to their star player Tyrese Haliburton. This Iowa State team is a very inconsistent team, but if they can find their consistency, they will be a very tough out with Haliburton on the squad.
Iowa State plays Oklahoma State tomorrow and Auburn Saturday.
My prediction: They beat Oklahoma State at home, then lose to Auburn in the Big-12-SEC challenge, in a game that will be closer than what many may think.
