Bracketology 2020: Georgia/Kentucky, Baylor/Florida among key matchups
6. Creighton (14-5, 3-3) at DePaul (13-5, 1-4) – Wednesday, Jan 22
NET rankings: Creighton (33), DePaul (51)
It was just a month ago when we all were singing the praises of the Blue Demons. They had a tremendous non-conference resume and were on their way to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. Then they reverted back to their old ways against Big East foes, starting off 0-4 with losses to Providence and St. John’s. They did get a much-needed victory over DePaul this weekend but still has work to do going forward.
It’ll help to get a win over Creighton, a team with a resume as strong as their offense. The Bluejays are safely in the field but should avoid taking on a bunch of losses to avoid an unsatisfactory seed. With the game being at home, DePaul needs to get to one. But with this likely to be a 40-minute shootout, can the Blue Demons keep up with the Bluejays?
5. Washington (12-7, 2-4) at Utah (10-7, 1-4) – Thursday, Jan 23
NET rankings: Washington (47), Utah (81)
Having gone 2-5 in their last seven matchups, Washington Basketball is in bad shape. They missed out on a chance at a massive win against Oregon, while still needing to make up for that awful Cal defeat. Not having Quade Green (academics) for possibly the rest of the season makes things even more dire for the Huskies. And depending on what happens this week, their at-large hopes might be done.
Regardless of how talented teams are, the back-to-back road games at both Colorado and Utah is one of the toughest things to do. It’s incredibly rare for teams to win both games, hoping really to split. For Washington, the Saturday game at Colorado is a huge task but they really need to avoid a bad loss at last-place Utah. A loss to the Utes will make the Buffaloes contest a “must-win”, even though they’d be clear-cut underdogs.
