Oregon Basketball: 2019-20 keys for home victory against USC Trojans
Key #3: The play of Richardson and Mathis
It has been a struggle, to say the least for these two Ducks over the past three games. They have combined for a stat line that has to cause some concern to everyone in Eugene: 7.6 PPG, 17.6 FG%, 12.0 3pt%. In a game where Oregon should have the advantage in the guard department, they need big games from their two backcourt members. Richardson has settled for threes over the past few games, going away from what had made him so dangerous earlier in the year. His ability to be the second playmaker for the Ducks is so important to take the pressure off of Pritchard.
Richardson allows for Pritchard to not only get a minute or two rest here or there but allows for the ability for the Ducks star guard to play off the ball. Look for Richardson to go back to attacking the basket and utilizing his quick spin move he loves so much. Mathis needs to get back on track as well and in a hurry. His shooting woes have resulted in fewer minutes for the New Mexico transfer.
After an impressive start to the season, Mathis has cooled off and bounced up and down the rotation since the start of January. With the Trojans locked in on Payton, these two guards will have their opportunities and will need to capitalize if the Ducks want to get out of their January 23rd matchup with a win.
