Butler Basketball: Takeaways from overtime home win over Marquette
2. Hinkle was electric…
I have essentially not missed a Butler home game over the past 4.5 seasons (when I started school – now graduated). I might not have the most extensive history in the crowd, but this was the most electric atmosphere that I have experienced in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Even before the opening tip-off of the game, you could feel the buzz in the air. The Butler fanbase understands that it has a potentially special team this season and it was ready to help will the team out of a three-game slump.
Of course, the arrival of Butler Blue IV got people on its feet prior to the game, but it was more than just that. The sellout crowd was extremely engaged all night long despite being a late tip that nearly lasted into Saturday morning. Hinkle Fieldhouse is highly-regarded as one of the most historic venues in all of college basketball. In this contest against Marquette, the fanbase showed why it can also be one of the most hostile.
Butler sits at 4-3 and in a tie for third place in the Big East right now. As a result, it has some work to do to truly compete for the regular-season conference title. If Hinkle is able to remain that engaged for home games as the season progresses, opponents will have a very hard time escaping with victories. The Dawgs fed off the energy from the crowd throughout the night and Kamar Baldwin did nothing but increase the decibels with each mid-range jumper.
The difference in the arena volume between when the Dawgs were shooting free-throws and after they made them…complete silence to deafening pandemonium. Goosebumps.
