Big Ten Basketball power rankings: Trying to make sense of 12 good teams
7. Indiana Hoosiers 15-4 (5-4)
Archie Miller is finally figuring it out at Indiana and that’s without two All-Big Ten players. The Hoosiers started 8-0 with a big-time win over Florida State. But then Wisconsin took them out on the road which prevented them from cracking the top-25. The Hoosiers lost at home to Arkansas right before Big Ten play. After that, it’s been your typical Big Ten season. A few wins here and a few losses there.
The Hoosiers only lost once lost once at home in Big Ten play and that came recently to Maryland. What a game that was. Almost an instant classic. But it was a Sunday afternoon that ended up turning dark for the sporting world.
Indiana was in that entire game against the Terrapins. Maryland did hold a nine-point lead at halftime, but the Hoosiers went ahead late in the second half. Indiana needed a split with Maryland to keep pace and stay safe in bracketology. Trayce Jackson-Davis did his thing in the front court and Rob Phinisee made some great passes. Three of their starters combined for just 16 points. But Jerome Hunter and Devonte Green scored 28 between the two of them off the bench.
The Terps got the season sweep, but Indiana still has a nice record. The state of Indiana is just a nightmare for Michigan State. They picked up a huge win over Michigan State. All five starters are capable of scoring double-digits. The bench goes five strong and against Michigan State, they scored 16 points. But then at Rutgers, the reserves almost put up a goose egg if it wouldn’t have been for Hunter scoring a field goal. Indiana certainly looks good when shots are falling and their freshman star Jackson-Davis is touching the ball. And closing out games will be key going forward.
