8) Rhode Island will be dangerous in the NCAA Tournament

If you haven’t seen Rhode Island play this season yet, I don’t blame you. The A-10 doesn’t get many games on national TV and, when they do, they’ve usually be reserved for teams like Dayton and VCU this season.

But Rhody did get their chance on national TV Friday night and took advantage, absolutely dismantling VCU for an 87-75 win in which they led by as many as 27 points. Point guard Fatts Russell, one of the best mid-major players in the nation, led the way with 30 points and was the best player on the court.

That was the latest victory in what is now an eight-game win streak for the Rams, who now own two victories over VCU along with non-conference wins over Alabama and Providence.

Rhode Island was already in a good spot with their NCAA Tournament resume – Busting Brackets bracketologist Lukas Harkins had them as a No. 10 seed before their win over VCU on Friday – and this only strengthens it. They’re now 6-4 against Quad 1-2 opponents, which is certainly deserving of a bid.

With a legitimate star in Russell, an experienced team, and a reliable defense that ranks 43rd nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, Rhode Island has all the ingredients need to pull off an upset for two in the Big Dance.
