The greatest game in the rivalry has arrived. North Carolina entered the game ranked number 2 in the country. While Duke had yet to win a game in the ACC conference. When the game tipped off it went as many would have expected it to with North Carolina racing out to an early 17-point lead. The Tar Heels were firing on all cylinders. The final points in the early run for North Carolina was an awe-striking dunk by star Jerry Stackhouse.
In what appeared to be a game in which North Carolina was going to run Duke out of their own gym, the tides quickly turned when Duke countered with a quick 10-0 run capped off by a huge dunk from Blue Devil Greg Newton. Duke came all the way back and was able to build a 12-point lead quickly after the half. During the run, the Blue Devils made 16 out of 20 shots and committed zero turnovers. It is an easy way to get a lead when you can hold onto the ball. Just when it looked like Duke had grabbed the momentum in this game.
North Carolina came storming back taking the lead late. Never fear Duke fans. Big man Cherokee Parks hit two huge free throws to send the game to overtime. The first overtime period was just as good as regulation. North Carolina raced out to a quick 9-point lead. Serge Zwikker was at the line with a chance to ice the game. It would have given the Tar Heels a 5-point lead with four seconds to go. Jeff Capel then hit the second most famous shot in Duke history. The first obviously being the Laettner fade away to beat Kentucky. The shot by Capel was a buzzer-beater from half-court.
That shot kept Duke’s hopes alive and sent the game to a second overtime. In the second extra frame, it was an offensive struggle. The Tar Heels yet again left the door open for Duke, but the Blue Devils could not get a shot up. North Carolina won the greatest game in this rivalries history 102-100 in double overtime.
