Mid-major Basketball power rankings: Rhode Island, New Mexico State make moves
12. Bowling Green Falcons (17-6, 8-2 in MAC)
If you’re looking for a frontrunner for MAC Player of the Year, junior Justin Turner is making a case for being the frontrunner. The guard is averaging just under 18 ppg and is coming off a 31-point effort in a close loss to Central Michigan just this week. In the game prior, Turner had team-high 23 points in a one-point win over Buffalo on the road.
Bowling Green currently has the best conference record in the league and after Akron’s skid is making a case that they’re the favorite to win the league tournament in March. We’ll get a better look at the Falcons, with a pair of matchups against the Zips coming up this month.
11. Yale Bulldogs (16-5, 4-1 in Ivy League)
Yale has had an easy first few games in the Ivy League, winning by an average of around 18 ppg. But the competition increased on Friday with Harvard, who had previously lost their last two games, coming to town. They had a double-digit lead throughout the first half and were leading most of the game.
Yale did come back and thanks to a miraculous foul on a made three-pointer, had a chance to tie the game and go into overtime. But Azar Swain, who had a career-high 33 points to even keep the Bulldogs in the game, missed the potential game-tying free throw to lose the game. Losing to Harvard isn’t bad for it limits what Yale can do the rest of the way in terms of losing in the regular season. Their at-large hopes took a hit with this home loss.
