Gonzaga Bulldogs (25-1, 11-0 in WCC)

The biggest storyline coming into Saturday’s reveal was whether Gonzaga or San Diego State was going to land in the West Region as the No. 1 seed. The thought was that the unbeaten Aztecs would get the edge but wins over Arizona and Oregon by the committee were cited as reasons why the Bulldogs got the advantage.

That’s huge for a number of reasons. First off, assuming both stays on the 1 seed line, the West Region leader will get to play in Los Angeles in the second weekend. Whoever gets shipped out East has to play in Madison Square Garden. And with Duke projected as also being in the East Region, that potential matchup would essentially be a road game for whoever has to travel east.

If Gonzaga wins out, there’s no way for San Diego State to catch them. They don’t have any Quad-1 games left on their schedule, while the Bulldogs have at least three more after this weekend. And after beating Saint Mary’s on the road by 30 points on Saturday, the chances of Gonzaga running the table are high.

Considering how tight the resumes are, getting clarity as to who had the current edge for the West Region top seed was important for everyone to see. And now that Gonzaga has the lead, they basically control their destiny. Win out or the Aztecs fall will have the WCC juggernaut remaining out West until the Final Four.
